Royal canal bike rental
From my initial query to return of my bike rental, Dave was the penultimate professional. All knowing and accommodating, he shared valuable and insightful information... read more about the Royal Canal route. Good points to stop and replenish, hotels and restaurant recommendations and suggested side trips were of his ken. His advice and counsel made for a thoroughly enjoyable 2-day trek - Maynooth to Longford. Highly recommend talking and doing business with this fellow.

We had an amazing time cycling from Maynooth to Longford over two days, thanks to Royal Canal Bike Hire. Dave is really friendly and helpful! We took his advice and... read more didn't rush, taking the time to stop off and see the sights en route. The canal is absolutely beautiful, and there's loads of great places along it to pick up a drink or a bite to eat (check out McGuinness's store in Ballynacarrigy for freshly-baked soda bread!). The entire route is very well signposted – the path swaps sides fairly regularly at bridges, but the signs always point you in the right direction. The towpath surface is generally in really good condition the whole way, and for the bits that are (slightly) bumpier, the bikes' suspension helps to take the edge off!

For a while now, I wanted to cycle the 80 miles along the Royal Canal Greenway from Maynooth to Longford in a day. I live in England, my parents live... read more in Longford so it would be a good way of traveling to see them. So rang Dave initially to ask a couple of questions. He was very helpful. I booked 2 bikes for me and my son online. We collected the bikes at 10am a week later at the collection point in Maynooth. Dave had everything ready, set up. Gave us a few tips about the Greenway, where to eat and get water etc and off we went. The Greenway itself is exceptionally well signosted, maintened and a doddle to navigate. Perfect surface for cycling the whole length. Arrived in Longford, dropped the bikes off at The Tally ho pub, which Dave had arranged, as we were only cycling one way. The bikes themselves were in very good order, and suited our needs. All good, and very straightforward, just the way I like things to be. Cheers

Great service and excellent bike meant a very comfortable spin from Maynooth to Mullingar and back over 2 days.

A flat and picturesque bicycle path along the canal. The blackberries were in season and sorted out snack breaks. Bikes were of a high quality and really good service received.

Pre-booked bikes and accommodation for the whole Greenway over 3 days, and an extra day for us to explore a bit more at the end if we wanted to. ... read more Dave was able to add lots of helpful local knowledge which was invaluable - for example, the first food stop we planned (Nanny Quinn’s) wasn’t open on Tuesdays, and he was able to direct us to alternatives. We especially enjoyed Cunningham’s, a real old school shop and bar with fantastic ‘99’ ice creams which we probably would have missed otherwise. I struggled to find accommodation in Mullingar, despite looking well in advance, but I hadn’t realised the Fleadh was on that week. I would totally recommend actively booking the cycle trip to coincide with Fleadh week if it’s in Mullingar again! This really added to our trip! We scored most of our ‘Irish Bingo’ points here (Irish dancing, fiddle, harp, tin whistle!). For a bit or R&R mid trip, the Bloomfield hotel was a lovely friendly spot to stay 3m from Mullingar. Scenery was mostly dairy farms, grazing, heather and peat harvesting, very rural. Canal borders where full of meadow plants, the waterway full of beautiful bulrushes and thousands of water lilies. We spotted about 15 herons and a kingfisher along the banks. It’s nature trail triumph. Lock 26 was a quirky coffee stop at picturesque Coolnahay. The cycling is easy and suitable for non cyclists. The bikes are robust and Dave supplied tools/pump, which we didn’t need. Bike pick up was easy at the Richmond Inn, staff there are wonderful.
